Sales Karma: Keep Sowing, the Fruits Will Come!

When you’ve spent over 50 years in sales, you learn a thing or two about life and business. I’ve sold everything from tea to truck tires and trained countless salespeople along the way. And if there’s one lesson that’s stood the test of time, it’s this: your karma in sales matters—what you sow, you shall reap.

In every sales training, I emphasize the importance of genuine intent. You see, many salespeople are just focused on ‘closing the deal,’ often pushing products just to meet their targets. But sales karma doesn’t work like that. You can’t force the fruit before planting the seed and nurturing it. The best salespeople I’ve trained are those who genuinely try to help their customers, not just sell to them.

What is Sales Karma?

What is Karma? You may be a Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim or a Sikh – but you need to understand KARMA as a universal concept that teaches us that our actions—good or bad—will eventually come back to us. In sales, this translates to your approach and attitude with customers. If you are honest, helpful, and solution-oriented, success will eventually find you. However, if you focus only on extracting value from customers, your growth will hit a ceiling.

An Anecdote from My Sales Journey

Years ago, I was working with a young salesman named Amit. Amit was ambitious but lacked patience. He would often pressure clients into purchases they weren’t ready for, using every trick in the book to close the deal. At first, it seemed to work—his numbers looked good. But slowly, customer complaints began to pile up. Referrals dried up. His short-term gains led to long-term losses.

I sat him down and shared a simple analogy: “Amit, sales is like farming. You can’t dig up seeds every day to check if they’re sprouting. You need to nurture them with water, sunlight, and care. In sales, this means building trust, offering value, and being patient. The fruits will come.”

He took this to heart and changed his approach. Instead of pushing products, he started listening to customers’ needs, sometimes even advising them against a purchase if it wasn’t right for them. It took time, but soon, Amit was getting repeat business and referrals. His sales karma had shifted, and with it, his success.

Sowing Good Seeds in Sales

So, how do you sow the right seeds in sales?

  1. Listen First, Sell Later: Understand what the customer truly needs.
  2. Provide Real Value: Don’t just sell for the sake of selling—help solve a problem.
  3. Stay Consistent: Keep nurturing relationships even when there’s no immediate benefit.
  4. Avoid Manipulation: Don’t chase short-term wins at the cost of long-term trust.
  5. Be Patient: Just like in farming, results take time. Keep working diligently.

The Harvest Will Come

If you stay true to these principles, your sales karma will reward you. Opportunities will present themselves, deals will close, and, most importantly, you will build a reputation as a trusted salesperson. The journey may be slow, but the fruits of your labour will be sweet and lasting.

So, my dear sales warriors, keep sowing good seeds. The fruits will come. And remember, in sales and in life, your karma always comes back to you.

Happy selling!
